SHOW DESCRIPTION:
When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison tells the story of her father, a volatile, brilliant man whose hidden secrets and desires define her family and her growing understanding of her own sexuality. Moving between past and present, Alison shares her unique childhood.
CAST REQUIREMENTS: Looking for non-union actor/singers to play the following roles (4 masculine presenting roles, 5 feminine presenting roles, plus 1 Swing role (for a total of 10 roles including 3 Children?s roles)

Alison: Early to mid-40?s; mezzo soprano, range: E3-D5; LGBTQIA+ preferred
Alison Bechdel, a lesbian cartoonist. Now a self-aware adult, she can reflect insightfully on her own life and her relationship with her father before his tragic death. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song.Medium Alison: 18 to 21 years old; mezzo soprano, range: G3-E5; LGBTQIA+ preferred
Alison Bechdel as a freshman in college. Newly discovering her sexuality, an incredibly well-read, hyper-intelligent teenager, her uncertainty about who she is makes her socially awkward at times. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song.Bruce: Mid to late 40?s; baritone, range: A2-G4; LGBTQIA+ preferred
Alison?s father. A high-school English teacher and funeral home director, who spends his spare time on the historic restoration of his home. A complex man with a hot temper because of years of suppressing who he truly is. He can be caring and attentive to his children but is also quick to anger. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song. Ability to play some piano is a plus.Helen: Mid to late 40?s; mezzo soprano, range: A2-G4
Alison?s mother. Frustrated and exhausted by her tumultuous marriage, she has spent her life trying to be a good mother and wife while knowingly turning a blind eye to the irreverent activities of her husband. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song. Ability to play piano is a plus.Joan: 18 to 25 years old; alto, range G3-G4; LGBTQIA+ preferred
A student at Oberlin College. She exudes a confident, strong, sexual energy, with a dry sense of humor. Unlike Alison, Joan is very comfortable in her own skin and openly identifies as an out and proud lesbian.Ensemble: 16 to 30, tenor, range: G3-A4 (opt D#5); LGBTQIA+ preferred
The actor will double as Roy (A young man that Bruce hires to do yard work), Pete (A mourner who visits the funeral home), Mark (A high school junior), and Bobby Jeremy (The lead singer of a band in Alison?s imagination.) A strong actor who can transition into multiple roles throughout the show. Seeking a strong singer with a clean pop sound.CHILD ROLES (3):
Small Alison: 8 to 11 years old; alto, range: E3-E5
Alison Bechdel as a child. Precocious and opinionated. On the cusp of finding herself and forming her own views on how a girl her age should behave and dress. Seeking an actress who is confident and intelligent. Must be a strong singer who can move seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song.Christian: 10 to 14 years old; tenor, range: C#4-E5;
Small Alison?s older brother. The oldest of the three Bechdel children, he strives to be the leader, but is sometimes overshadowed by Alison?s strong personality. Seeking a singer with a natural sound, good sense of humor, harmony, and pitch.John: 6 to 8 years old; treble/boy soprano, range: C#4-D5;
Small Alison?s younger brother. The youngest of the three Bechdel children, he is full of energy with a quirky imagination. Looks up to his siblings. Seeking a strong singer with a natural sound, good sense of harmony and pitch.Images
